What Would You Do if Work Were Optional?

August 28, 2026

What if you could reach a point where work becomes optional? That’s the idea behind the FIRE movement, which stands for Financial Independence, Retire Early.

FIRE is a growing approach to retirement planning that focuses on building financial independence earlier in life. While retiring early is part of the concept, the bigger goal is freedom—having enough financial resources to choose how and when you work.

What Is the FIRE Movement?

Achieving financial independence generally requires a combination of aggressive saving, disciplined spending, and consistent investing.

The idea is simple: save and invest a significant portion of your income so that your assets can eventually provide enough income to support your lifestyle. Investment returns are never guaranteed, and everyone’s path will look different, but the principle is to put your money to work for your long-term goals.

There are several different approaches to FIRE:

Lean FIRE focuses on achieving financial independence while maintaining a modest lifestyle. Because expenses are lower, less money may be needed to support retirement.

Fat FIRE takes the opposite approach, requiring a larger portfolio to maintain a higher standard of living throughout retirement.

Barista FIRE falls somewhere in between. The goal is to build enough savings to leave full-time employment while continuing to earn some income through part-time work, consulting, or a side business.

What Does FIRE Mean for You?

The FIRE movement isn't necessarily about retiring as young as possible. For many people, it’s about creating financial flexibility.

Maybe that means traveling, spending more time with family, pursuing a passion, starting a business, or simply having the ability to walk away from a job you no longer enjoy.

But reaching financial independence requires more than simply saving aggressively. You also need to consider taxes, investment risk, healthcare costs, inflation, longevity, and how you’ll generate income once you stop working.

Whether your goal is to retire early or simply retire on your own terms, thoughtful planning can help you determine what financial independence looks like for you.
